BMI stands for Body Mass Index. It is a numerical value of your weight in relation to your height, used to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems.
For the metric system, the formula is weight (kg) divided by height in meters squared (m²). For the imperial system, it is weight (lbs) multiplied by 703, divided by height in inches squared (in²).
Standard categories are: Underweight (BMI less than 18.5), Normal weight (BMI 18.5–24.9), Overweight (BMI 25–29.9), and Obesity (BMI 30 or greater).
While BMI is a useful general screening tool, it does not directly measure body fat. It may misclassify athletes with high muscle mass as overweight or fail to identify excess body fat in older individuals.
This calculator is generally designed for adults (age 18+). For children and teens, BMI is age- and sex-specific and is often referred to as BMI-for-age.
You can check your BMI periodically, such as during annual health check-ups. However, it is more important to monitor overall health indicators and how you feel physically rather than focusing solely on the number.
